This very happy bird-song was recorded in late winter/very early spring of 2012. It was a cold, partly sunny morning after a cold night, yet this red male cardinal was singing proud and loud. Recorded in a small town, with some traffic sounds in the back. Also, if you listen close enough you will hear some starlings in the background with their waking up chorus. Recorded using the handy/zoom h4n recorder and a samson c0-2 microphone mounted inside my home-built parabolic reflector.

Opening a sliding door to a lot of chatty morning birds. You can hear a some fire truck sirens far in the background. After a few minutes, door is closed, i let you hear the difference, and we’re done. Recorded with a tascam dr-05 at about 5 am. Converted to mp3 with command “lame --preset extreme” since it’s rather huge. Not normalized; lame reports a playback gain of +21 db.

Springtime in a rural indiana neighborhood. A pair of neumann km183 microphones connected by canare l-4e6s and neutrik connectors to a zoom f8 recorder. Gain set to 60db. No processing. During a recent wandering in one of the many woods around me i found this wonderful small creek which, even though small, had a nice flow to it thanks to some recent rain. As i sat down to record the soothing sound of the riffles, a group of chickadees decided to come check me out. Enjoy.

This sound was recorded via the use of a behringer b2 microphone, fostex fr2 and a home made parabolic reflector made from a tv satellite dish. The source of the sound was between 100m-200m away from the microphone. This has been eq'ed with high-end shelving to reduce gain noise, low-end shelved up to 1khz (to reduce wind and background noise) and the overall gain has been increased. This a spare recording from a short film i was making. It's a stereos track but all sounds are recorded to the left channel. This was recorded on a zoom h4n and a sennheiser me67. The sound is of a woodland near liskeard, cornwall, uk. There are occasionally cars passing, but mostly it's quite clean - and the cars might be useful for somebody.

This is a recording made on the morning of march 25, 2012 in greensboro, north carolina, usa, featuring a thunderstorm and plenty of birdsong. I recorded this as i thought it was a pretty interesting contrast at the time. This recording was made with an olympus ls100 and it's internal microphones behind a window screen.

Recorded on my zoom h4n in early spring at 1:32 am. I believe this to be a call of the great horned owl that is found all over north american as well as parts of central and south anerica. There is a distant sound of a dog barking but there are three owl calls, with the last two the cleanest.

An early spring bird-recording trip turned into a surprise, steady rain. (*actually, it should not have been a surprise, i just was too lazy to check the weather before i went out exploring nature!). I set up my zoom h4n recorder partially under a picnic table and recorded this wonderful, peaceful light rain falling in a small field of very large white pines, which were growing on a penninsula of a small lake. Recorded @ 8khz with a griffin italk mic to a recently refurbished 20gb 3rd generation ipod - my favorite lo-fi field recording / interview rig. If you have a recording device on your person, you get a lot of stuff you'd otherwise miss altogether. This rig helps me get those things too ephemeral to capture with a stereo pair; sounds i would regret not having at all. I keep it on my belt 90% of the time. Just in case.

The sound of birds and distant thunder awoke me from a long nap, and so i sprung off the couch and grabbed my recording equipment, dashing outside just in time to record the arrival of a thunderstorm. Over the course of this clip, the storm gets closer and closer, until it starts to rain with increasing intensity. The clip is nicely unmolested by wind, and contains a nice background of birds. A tremendous thunderclap is featured in the middle, three minutes in.

A beautiful call of the eastern phoebe. . . This call is also a very unique call in the bird-world. In the eastern and midwestern united states, these are usually the first to arrive in the spring. I have seen these many times as i hike in the deep woods, but this was a nice surprise for me to hear one, literally, in my backyard about 7 o:clock in the morning. I recorded this one in my backyard -- i live in a small town in a rural area. I caught this on my handy zoom h4n recorder, using its internal, built-in stereo microphones set on a record volume about 70. Enjoy. .
